Chapter 8 - The Guests at the Other Tables

The other guests had become statues.

Earlier, they had laughed softly when Eleanor made jokes about Claire being “sensitive about money.”

They had smiled when Nathan dismissed her.

They had watched the envelope slide across the table like a party game.

Now their silence was less graceful.

It was survival.

No one wanted the camera to catch them smiling.

No one wanted to be heard saying the wrong thing.

No one wanted to become the sixth witness.

Claire swept the phone slowly enough to capture the room but not long enough to give them the comfort of performance.

A woman in a gold dress looked away.

A man in a tuxedo stared at the floor.

Two cousins stood near the champagne station, frozen with glasses in hand.

Claire brought the camera back to Nathan.

“This is what you wanted, right?”

His eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“An audience.”

His lips parted.

She stepped closer, phone still high.

“You wanted them to see me obey.”

Nathan’s jaw flexed.

“You humiliated my mother.”

Claire’s voice went soft.

“She sent a bill across a dinner table.”

“She is family.”

Claire looked at Eleanor.

“No. She is expensive.”

Vanessa gasped.

Eleanor’s face contorted.

Nathan lunged one step forward, then stopped himself so abruptly his polished shoe slid on the floor.

The camera caught the movement.

Claire did not flinch.

That terrified him.

It terrified her too, somewhere deep down.

But the fear no longer controlled her muscles.

She had found something stronger.

Not revenge.

Not courage exactly.

Evidence.

Evidence did not need to feel brave.

It only needed to exist.

She lowered her voice.

“Nathan, look at me.”

He did.

She angled the phone so his face and her bruised cheek shared the frame.

“Do you want to explain what happened?”

His throat moved.

May you like

No words came.
