Chapter 1 - The Envelope on the Wedding Bed

A young groom recognizes his mother’s rare birthmark on his older bride just before she begins revealing a buried family secret.

Eleanor closed the wedding-suite door with both trembling hands.

Outside, faint security shadows moved under the crack of the hallway light.

A muffled radio voice passed beyond the door.

Then silence returned to the luxurious former hacienda suite.

Warm bedside light glowed over cream walls, a dark wooden headboard, white bedding, and a distant chandelier reflection trembling against the polished floor.

Travis sat on the bed in navy satin pajamas, watching his new bride with growing concern.

Eleanor looked beautiful and terrified.

Her burgundy satin nightgown shone softly in the amber light.

Her silver-gray hair framed her face.

Her wedding ring caught the bedside lamp.

Her smile shook like it was being forced over a wound.

Then she crossed the room and dropped a thick envelope, bundled cash, and luxury truck keys onto the bed.

“One million dollars and the truck are yours.”

The cash landed heavily and slid across the white blanket.

Travis recoiled.

His eyes widened with hurt.

He pushed the money and keys back toward her with both hands.

“I married you, not your money.”

Eleanor’s smile collapsed.

She gripped the edge of her nightgown near her chest, breathing too fast, tears flooding her eyes.

“Son… Travis… there’s something you need to know.”

The word froze him.

Son.

Travis surged to his feet so suddenly the mattress shook and cash bundles spilled to the floor.

Eleanor recoiled against the bedside table, one hand clamped over her mouth.

Her burgundy strap slipped.

A dark uneven birthmark near her left shoulder appeared in the warm light.

Travis stopped mid-step.

His face drained white.

“That mark… my mother had the same one.”

Eleanor violently pulled the strap back into place.

Travis grabbed the envelope and tore it open.

An old photograph peeked from inside.

Before he could pull it free, Eleanor clamped both hands around his wrist.

“The truth began long before you ever met me.”

Then footsteps stopped outside the bedroom door.
