Chapter 7 - The Photograph Almost Opens

Travis slid one finger under the photograph.
Eleanor’s whole body tightened.
He stopped halfway.
Not from mercy.
From terror.
He wanted the truth, but the first glimpse might destroy the only shape of his past he still understood.
He looked at Eleanor.
“Is my mother alive in this photo?”
She nodded.
“Is she with you?”
A tear slid down Eleanor’s cheek.
“Yes.”
“Are you related to her?”
Eleanor opened her mouth.
The door slammed once from the outside.
Not open.
Just struck.
A warning.
Travis spun toward it.
Eleanor whispered, “They heard.”
His eyes widened.
“You’re wearing a wire?”
“No.”
“Then how?”
Her gaze moved toward the smartphone.
Travis looked at it.
The phone screen was dark.
But not dead.
He crossed the room and picked it up.
Eleanor reached out.
“Don’t.”
He saw an active call indicator, unreadable in the cinematic glow but unmistakable enough by context.
His face twisted.
“You called them before you came in.”
“I had to.”
“Why?”
“In case I couldn’t say it.”
Rage and fear collided in him.
“So they’ve been listening?”
Eleanor lowered her head.
“Yes.”
The door handle jerked.
Travis put the phone down slowly.
Then he looked at the envelope.
“Good.”
Eleanor blinked.
“What?”
“If they’re listening, they can hear me too.”
He stepped closer to the door.
His voice shook, but it carried.
“No one enters until she finishes.”
The hallway went silent.
Eleanor stared at him.
Not with relief.
With devastation.
Because his protection was arriving for a woman he might hate in the next minute.
The photograph remained half-hidden.
The unidentified woman’s dress still visible only at the edge.
Nothing fully revealed.
