Chapter 4 - The Photograph Corner

Only one corner of the photograph was visible.
Faded cream paper.
A piece of a woman’s dress.
A shadow near the edge, maybe a shoulder, maybe a curtain, maybe nothing.
Travis stared at it as if the whole truth might leak from that tiny exposed fragment.
Eleanor watched his fingers.
Every time they tightened, her face twisted.
“Is she in this?” he asked.
Eleanor did not answer.
“My mother.”
Her eyes filled.
“Travis…”
“Is my mother in this photograph?”
The bedroom handle shifted again.
This time both of them heard it clearly.
Eleanor turned so fast her burgundy gown caught the light.
“Not yet,” she whispered toward the door.
Travis went still.
“You’re talking to them?”
“No.”
“Then who are you warning?”
She looked trapped.
Outside, footsteps moved away by one pace.
Not leaving.
Waiting.
Travis lifted the envelope higher.
“Tell them to come in.”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because they will tell the version that keeps you quiet.”
He stared at her.
“And yours doesn’t?”
Pain crossed her face.
“You think I wanted this?”
“You married me.”
The accusation landed like a slap neither of them could acknowledge.
Eleanor’s lips trembled violently.
“I know.”
“That’s all you can say?”
“No,” she whispered. “It is the smallest part of what I need to say.”
Travis stepped back, shaking his head.
“The smallest?”
She looked at the cash on the floor.
“I thought if I gave you enough to leave, you might be safe before you hated me.”
His face twisted.
“Hated you for what?”
Her eyes moved to his.
Then to the photograph.
Then to the covered mark on her shoulder.
“I cannot start with the ending.”
Travis’s breath shook.
“Then start with why my mother had your mark.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
For one second, she looked older than sixty.
Not elegant.
Not mysterious.
Only broken.

When she opened her eyes, the door handle began turning again.
