Chapter 3 - The Word She Could Not Take Back

Son.

The word stayed in the suite.

It sat between them on the white bedding, heavier than the cash, sharper than the keys, more dangerous than the unopened photograph.

Eleanor pressed one trembling hand over her mouth as if she could force the word back into herself.

Travis stared at her.

“You called me son.”

“I was upset.”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“No one accidentally says that on their wedding night.”

The phrase made both of them recoil.

Wedding night.

The room suddenly felt grotesque around them.

The champagne bucket near the dresser.

The rose petals scattered by hotel staff.

The white sheets turned down.

The warm bedside lamp creating intimacy where terror had entered instead.

Eleanor turned away, shoulders shaking.

“There are things about your past you were never told.”

Travis’s face hardened.

“My past?”

She nodded.

“And yours.”

“And yours?”

Her silence answered.

He gripped the envelope harder.

The paper bent.

Eleanor reached out in panic.

“Don’t damage it.”

“Then tell me why it matters.”

She looked at him, eyes red and swollen.

“Because it is the only thing I have left that proves I didn’t invent this.”

Travis’s anger faltered.

Not disappeared.

Shifted.

“You’ve been carrying proof?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Eleanor’s breath came unevenly.

“Longer than I should have.”

The security shadows outside moved again.

Travis heard a soft murmur beyond the door.

Not words.

Presence.

He looked at the black smartphone on the nightstand.

“Is that why security is here?”

Eleanor’s eyes snapped to the phone.

“Don’t call anyone yet.”

“Why?”

“Because you don’t know who answers first.”

The sentence chilled him.

He glanced at the envelope.

At the door.

At the cash.

At Eleanor’s covered shoulder.

Everything in the room had become a clue, and none of them pointed toward the marriage he thought he had entered.

Eleanor took one careful step closer.

“The truth began before you knew my name.”

Travis shook his head.

May you like

“Then maybe I never knew your name at all.”
