Chapter 9 - The Truth Begins

Travis’s fingers shook around the envelope.

“You were.”

The words had no complete shape yet.

They did not reveal Eleanor’s relationship to him.

They did not explain his mother.

They did not expose the family history.

They did not identify the people outside.

But they moved through his body like a warning.

“I was what?” he asked.

Eleanor’s mouth trembled.

“The reason everything split.”

He took a step back.

“No.”

“I’m not saying it to hurt you.”

“You don’t get to decide that.”

“I know.”

“Stop saying you know!”

His voice broke on the last word.

Eleanor flinched but stayed standing.

The bedroom went silent except for the faint movement outside the door.

Travis looked down at the photograph.

The corner seemed to pulse in his vision.

Part of a dress.

A faded background.

The hint of a hand.

An entire life concealed by one envelope fold.

He wanted to tear it open.

He wanted to burn it.

He wanted to wake up before Eleanor closed the door with trembling hands and called him son.

Eleanor took one careful breath.

“Before you were born, there was a promise.”

“Between you and my mother?”

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The door handle turned again.

This time, the lock clicked softly.

Someone outside had a key.

Travis turned sharply.

Eleanor went white.

“They’re coming in.”

Travis gripped the envelope tighter.

“Who?”

She shook her head.

The answer did not come.

The doorknob moved.

The smartphone screen glowed faintly on the nightstand.

The cash lay scattered across the floor.

The shoulder mark remained hidden beneath burgundy satin.

The photograph remained mostly concealed.

And Travis finally understood that Eleanor’s confession had only reached the first door.
