Chapter 8 - The Money Was an Apology

Travis looked at the cash again.
The million dollars no longer looked extravagant.
It looked desperate.
Eleanor followed his gaze.
“I know it was insulting.”
“It was disgusting.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then why?”
“Because I was told money is the only apology men survive.”
He stared at her.
“Who told you that?”
She looked at the door.
The answer remained outside.
Unrevealed.
Travis understood enough to feel sick.
The security.
The phone call.
The money.
The truck keys.
The photograph.
The old secret.
This was not only Eleanor’s confession.
It was a managed event that had gone wrong because emotion broke through the script.
He picked up the truck keys and threw them onto the bed.
They landed beside the envelope.
“I don’t want payment.”
“I know.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because I kept doing the wrong thing while knowing it was wrong.”
That sentence silenced him.
For the first time, Eleanor did not sound evasive.
She sounded condemned by herself.
He looked at her shoulder.
“Does my family know about you?”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Some of them.”
The room tilted.
“Some?”
She nodded.
“Not the truth. Pieces.”
“And the people outside?”
“They know enough to fear the rest.”
The handle stopped moving.
Travis almost smiled, but there was no humor in it.
“They can hear you.”
“Yes.”
“Then say something they fear.”
Eleanor looked toward the door.
Then back at Travis.
Her face twisted with guilt so deep it seemed to age her in seconds.
“The photograph is not the beginning.”
He swallowed.
“What is?”
She looked at the hidden image.
May you like
“You were.”
