Chapter 18 - THE VOICEMAILThe biggest piece of evidence came from Diane herself.
Not a confession.
A voicemail.
She left it for Trevor the morning after Benjamin died.
Trevor had deleted it.
Carrier backup preserved metadata and police recovered an audio copy from a synced tablet.
Diane’s voice:
“Do not tell Grace about the bottle. She’ll make this into something it wasn’t. I only gave them enough to settle down. Benjamin was always fragile. Luke is fine.”
I could not breathe.
Enough.
Not mistaken bottle?
Maybe she still could claim she realized afterward that she had used the wrong substance.
Then the next line:
“I’ve used it before and nothing happened.”
Silence.
The room seemed to contract.
Used it before.
That changed intent analysis.
Not intent to kill.
Evidence still did not support that.
But repeated deliberate administration of an adult sedating medication to infants despite no medical instruction was something else entirely.
Recklessness.
