Chapter 20 - I CONFRONT TREVORWe met in a lawyer’s conference room.

No Emma.

No family.

He looked ten years older.

I placed the transcript of the voicemail between us.

“You knew she had done it before.”

He shook his head.

“Not before Benjamin.”

“Emma heard you say ‘not that much.’”

“I thought it was gas medicine.”

“Then why did your mother tell you not to tell me about the bottle?”

“After.”

“You searched overdose symptoms.”

“After.”

“You searched whether Luke could have gotten the same thing.”

He cried.

“I know.”

“How long before you told the hospital?”

He whispered:

“Six hours.”

I wanted to hit him.

I did not.

I asked:

“Why?”

He said:

“Because if I said it out loud, Ben was dead because of Mom.”

I stared.

“And what was Luke during those six hours?”

Trevor folded forward.

His face in his hands.

I let him cry.
