Chapter 6 - THE AUTOPSIESThe medical examiner called me in person.

Dr. Nathan Weiss.
He spoke carefully.
Both boys had similar findings.
Neither death could be explained by congenital disease alone.
Toxicology had detected a sedating substance not prescribed to either infant.
I stopped hearing words.
“Both?”
“Yes.”
“Same thing?”
“Yes.”
“Did it kill them?”
“We believe it materially contributed to respiratory depression.”
Materially contributed.
Not:
Grandma killed them.
Medicine had boundaries.
“Could one dose do that?”
He refused to speculate about exact dosing without laboratory context.
Good.
I did not need instructions.
I needed truth.
“Was it in their bottles?”
“We can’t determine route from blood alone.”
Then:
“Police recovered feeding items and other materials that may help.”
Some bottles had been collected from our trash after all.
One responding paramedic had told police something looked unusual near the sink.
An officer bagged two before Diane’s cleaning the next day.

Tiny procedural decision.
Massive consequence.
