Chapter 24 - THE ESTATE FINALLY SETTLESGrandfather’s estate and trusts took almost two years to administer fully.

Taxes.

Valuations.

Charitable bequests.

Personal property.

Voting-trust allocations.

Nothing cinematic.

My economic inheritance was large.

So was Damian’s.

Neither of us became poor.

That mattered.

This was never a story where Damian crushed my inhaler because he needed grocery money.

He already had more wealth than most people could spend.

Grandfather’s remaining voting interests were divided through trusts rather than handed entirely to one heir.

Independent trustees retained meaningful authority.

Employees gained a modest additional voting pool through a trust Grandfather had created late in life.

That surprised Damian.

It surprised me too.

Grandfather had apparently decided the safest family succession involved slightly less family power.

Maybe illness clarifies things.

Maybe lawyers wore him down.

Either way:

No empire belonged to one person.

Damian’s funeral declaration had been wrong.

Not because I inherited it instead.

Because there was no crown to inherit.
