Chapter 3 - IT WAS NOT A MONEY-DESTRUCTION BUTTONBy midnight, the internet had already invented the remote.

One guest had filmed Damian crushing my inhaler.

Another captured the sound of alerts erupting from his phone.

No one clearly recorded the financial screens.

That was probably the only mercy.

Headlines appeared anyway.

MERCER HEIRESS “PUSHES BUTTON” AT BILLIONAIRE GRANDFATHER’S WAKE

Then:

DID ELIAS MERCER BUILD A DEAD-MAN SWITCH?

No.

He did not.

The black remote could not transfer money.

It could not sell stock.

It could not bankrupt Damian.

It had no magical connection to the stock market.

It was a duress transmitter.

That sounds dramatic because it was designed for a dramatic problem.

Mercer Systems had two classes of stock.

Public Class A shares.

And tightly restricted Class B voting shares held by the founding family and certain trusts.

Class B carried enhanced voting rights.

Transfer restrictions were strict.

My mother had received a block of Class B shares years before her death.

When she died, most passed into a trust for me.

At thirty, I received direct control over a portion.

By the time Grandfather died, I directly owned and controlled approximately 2.7 percent of the company’s economic equity but a significantly larger voting percentage because of the Class B structure.

Worth hundreds of millions on paper.

I did not have hundreds of millions in a checking account.

Stock wealth is not cash.

Damian had his own block.

Grandfather retained the largest family position.

His death would trigger trust and estate mechanisms that lawyers had spent years drafting.

My remote protected only one category of transactions:

Instructions purporting to transfer, pledge, convert, vote by proxy, or encumber my existing Class B shares.

Pressing the button transmitted an authenticated duress signal to a secure system administered by an independent transfer agent and trust company.

Once triggered:

Pending instructions using my authorization were suspended.

Transfer-agent staff received alerts.

Family-office counsel received alerts.

The corporate secretary received alerts.

Certain lenders who had relied on representations involving family-share collateral received automated notices requiring recertification.

That was why Damian’s phone exploded.

His financial structure depended on something involving my shares.

The remote did not destroy it.

It merely forced everyone involved to stop pretending my consent was already settled.
