Chapter 2

Ethan Vance had spent years believing fear was the same thing as control.
He controlled employees with contracts, investors with silence, reporters with access, and Maya with gratitude.
That was what he called it.
Gratitude.
He told her she should be grateful for the house, though she chose the architects who repaired the east wing after the foundation cracked.
Grateful for the lifestyle, though she hosted the dinners that saved his first failing partnership.
Grateful for his name, though hers had opened the first doors he walked through.
Grateful for two million dollars, though she had once signed away her own inheritance to keep his company from collapsing during a lawsuit he never admitted was his fault.
Now he stood in the doorway, rain misting his white shirt, watching Maya hold the phone between them.
Nathan Cole was not just any attorney.
He had been Eleanor Vance’s estate lawyer for twenty-eight years.
Eleanor, Ethan’s mother, had trusted almost no one. She trusted Nathan. And strangely, near the end of her life, she had trusted Maya more than her own son.
Ethan had hated that.
He hated the way Eleanor called Maya “steady.”
He hated the way she asked Maya to sit beside her during treatments.
He hated the way she stopped speaking when he entered the room.
When Eleanor died six weeks earlier, Ethan acted devastated in public and impatient in private.
He had delayed the will reading.
Postponed estate meetings.
Told Maya she did not need to attend.
“My mother’s affairs have nothing to do with you,” he said.
But now Nathan’s voice was on Maya’s phone, speaking with the authority of a man who had waited for exactly this moment.
Ethan lowered his pointing hand.
Chloe noticed.
For the first time, her smile disappeared.
Maya looked up at both of them from the stair, rain running down her face like tears she no longer wanted to waste.
Nathan’s voice continued, calm and precise.
“Do not enter that house alone. Do not sign the settlement. Do not surrender any keys, passwords, or documents.”
Ethan whispered, “Nathan.”
The attorney answered immediately.

“Mr. Vance. I was hoping you would hear this directly.”
