Chapter 3

Chloe’s hand tightened around Ethan’s arm.
“What is he talking about?” she demanded.
Ethan did not answer.
That frightened her more than anger would have.
She knew Ethan’s arrogance. She knew his temper. She knew the way he laughed when lawyers used careful language. But she had never seen him go quiet from one phone call.
Maya saw it too.
For months, Ethan had acted as if the divorce was already finished. He moved Chloe into the guest wing before Maya was gone. He replaced Maya’s staff with people loyal to his assistant. He froze one shared card and told her it was a banking error.
Then, tonight, he dragged her outside in the rain and threw a settlement at her like a bone.
Two million dollars.
The lake house in Vermont.
A confidentiality clause.
A waiver of future claims.
A signature before morning.
Maya had read enough before the rain smeared the ink.
“You want me to disappear before the will reading,” she said.
Ethan’s eyes flashed.
Chloe looked from him to Maya.
“You told me that was handled.”
Maya turned slowly toward Chloe.
Handled.
That word explained too much.
Handled meant Maya was not a wife. Not a person. Not even a rival.
She was an obstacle being removed before a door opened.
Nathan’s voice came again through the speaker.
“Mrs. Vance, remain where you are. My car is three minutes from the gate.”
Ethan snapped, “You are not entering my property.”
Nathan replied, “That is one of several assumptions we will address tonight.”
Chloe recoiled slightly.
The rain grew heavier, bouncing off the marble steps and soaking the edges of the papers at Maya’s feet.
Ethan stepped down one stair, towering over her.
“Maya, hang up.”
She did not move.
His voice lowered.
“You have no idea what you are interfering with.”
Maya looked at the man she had married.
“No, Ethan. I think I finally do.”

Inside the mansion, warm chandelier light glowed behind him like a kingdom beginning to dim.
