Chapter 7

Ethan moved fast.
Not toward Maya.
Toward the papers.
He bent, snatched the wet settlement folder from the marble, and held it against his chest as if the rain might erase the only version of the story he could control.
Nathan watched without reacting.
Maya watched too.
That was the difference between fear and clarity.
An hour earlier, Ethan’s sudden movement would have made her flinch.
Now it made him look desperate.
“You are trespassing,” Ethan said.
Nathan opened his leather case just enough to remove one sealed envelope. No writing was visible. No contents were shown.
“I am executing Eleanor Vance’s standing instructions.”
Chloe stared at the envelope.
“What instructions?”
Nathan did not answer her.
Ethan did.
“Nothing that matters.”
His voice was too quick.
Maya stepped up one more marble stair.
Ethan’s eyes cut to her.
“Don’t.”
It was the same word he had used for years.
Don’t question me.
Don’t embarrass me.
Don’t ask about the accounts.
Don’t call my mother.
Don’t speak to Nathan.
Don’t make this harder.
Maya heard all of them inside that one word.
Then she stepped anyway.
Her wet dress clung to her legs. Her hair dripped onto her shoulders. Her hands were cold.
But her voice was steady.
“I’m done obeying words that only protect your lies.”
Chloe’s mouth parted.
Ethan looked stunned that Maya had said it in front of another man.
Nathan’s eyes warmed with quiet approval.
A second car stopped beyond the gate.
Then another.
Ethan turned sharply.
“Who else did you call?”
Nathan closed the case.
“Witnesses Eleanor requested.”
Chloe’s hand slipped from Ethan’s arm.

For the first time, she looked at Maya not as a defeated wife, but as the person everyone had underestimated.
