Chapter 9

Chloe finally understood she had been promised a throne built over a trapdoor.

Her red gown clung slightly at the hem where rain mist touched the fabric. Her diamonds caught the chandelier light, but her eyes had lost their shine.

“You said she was finished,” she whispered to Ethan.

He did not look at her.

That answered enough.

Maya almost admired the cruelty of it.

Ethan had lied to both of them in different languages.

To Maya, he said: You are nothing without me.

To Chloe, he said: Everything will be yours once she signs.

Both statements depended on Maya disappearing quietly.

Nathan’s phone buzzed once.

He glanced at it, then looked toward the driveway.

“We should move inside before the weather damages the documents.”

Ethan snapped, “There will be no reading tonight.”

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“There will be no private settlement tonight.”

The distinction struck harder.

Ethan could delay grief ceremonies. He could pressure staff. He could stage a doorway humiliation. But Nathan had just separated the legal process from Ethan’s performance.

Maya reached the top stair.

She stood level with Ethan now, rainwater dripping from her sleeves onto the marble threshold.

Chloe took an involuntary step back.

Ethan stared at Maya as if seeing her clearly for the first time in years.

Not as a wife to discard.

Not as a body to remove from a doorway.

As a witness.

As a beneficiary of Eleanor’s final trust.

As a woman who had stopped begging him to be decent.

Maya looked past him into the foyer.

Warm light.

Crystal chandelier.

A house full of memory.

Then she looked back at Ethan.

“I’m going inside.”

His voice dropped.

“You’ll regret this.”

Maya answered quietly.

“No. I already regret staying outside my own life for this long.”
