Chapter 8

The mansion staff appeared inside the foyer.

Not all of them.

Just a few.

The house manager.

Eleanor’s former nurse.

The old driver who had served the Vance family longer than Ethan had been alive.

They stayed behind the warm line of chandelier light, silent but watching.

Ethan saw them and understood too much at once.

They were not surprised to see Nathan.

They were not surprised to see Maya.

They were only afraid of what Ethan might do next.

That meant the house had known.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

Maya turned and saw the old driver lower his eyes with shame. Eleanor’s nurse wiped tears from her cheek.

Something inside Maya twisted.

How many people had watched her marriage collapse quietly because rich houses teach silence as discipline?

Nathan spoke gently.

“Mrs. Vance, you do not have to remain outside.”

Ethan barked, “She is not coming back in.”

Maya looked at him.

For years, that sentence would have crushed her.

Not now.

She glanced at Nathan.

“Do I have the legal right to enter?”

Nathan’s answer came without hesitation.

“Yes.”

Ethan’s face went pale with rage.

Chloe whispered, “How?”

Nathan looked toward the open doors.

“That question belongs to the will reading.”

Maya did not ask further.

She understood the boundary.

No full reveal.

Not here.

Not in the rain.

Not before the proper witnesses were assembled.

But she also understood enough.

Ethan had thrown her outside a house he could not fully command.

He had offered two million dollars to erase a claim he pretended did not exist.

And now every person standing between the rain and the chandelier knew it.

Maya stepped onto the next stair.

Ethan did not move to block her.
