Chapter 2

My mother never trusted Martin Sterling.
She married him anyway.
People assume wealthy women are difficult to deceive because they have lawyers, advisers, and accountants.
That is not true.
Money attracts better liars.
My mother, Evelyn Hart, built Hart Maritime from two inherited cargo vessels into a global shipping network with private terminals, logistics software, and contracts spanning five continents.
She understood freight routes better than people.
Martin understood people better than freight.
He entered her life as a turnaround consultant after one of our European subsidiaries began losing money.
He was calm.
Measured.
Never visibly greedy.
He did not flatter my mother’s wealth.
He flattered her exhaustion.
“You should not have to carry all of this alone,” he told her.
Within two years, they were married.
Vanessa was nineteen then.
Martin’s daughter from his first marriage.
Beautiful, ambitious, and skilled at turning envy into injury while smiling for photographs.
At first, she called me sister.
Then half-sister, though we shared no blood.
Eventually, when Martin gained influence inside Hart Maritime, she called me privileged.
“You were born at the finish line,” she said.
“So were you, after your father married my mother.”
She never forgave that answer.
Adrian entered our family through business.
His investment firm wanted access to Hart Maritime’s private port expansion.
He was thirty, polished, and attentive in ways that felt sincere.
He remembered which side of the table I preferred for my wheelchair after the accident.
He opened doors without making a performance of helping.
He asked before touching the chair.
That mattered to me.
I had been paralyzed for eighteen months by then.
The collision changed my body.
It did not change my mind.
But people often spoke to me more slowly afterward, as though damage to my spine had reached my intelligence.
Adrian did not.
That was why I trusted him.
We became engaged after fourteen months.
Vanessa congratulated me while staring at the diamond.
Three weeks later, my mother died unexpectedly during an overseas trip.
Her final trust documents disappeared before probate began.
