Chapter 5

The Celestine contained more than financial records.

It contained traps.

Not illegal ones.

Auditable ones.

My mother had created controlled accounts designed to reveal who attempted access after her death.

Each account appeared valuable.

Each was monitored.

Each required signatures tied to different family members.

Martin touched the first within six days.

Adrian accessed the second through his investment firm.

Vanessa authorized spending from the third while believing it was part of my mother’s private inheritance reserve.

The money was real enough to attract them.

Restricted enough to record them.

“That was the bait,” Naomi explained.

“Bait for what?”

“For anyone trying to bypass your mother’s succession plan.”

The records did not prove the entire conspiracy.

Not yet.

They showed hidden transfers through Caribbean holding companies.

Payments to private security consultants.

A maritime contractor connected to the maintenance garage that serviced my vehicle before the crash.

Medical payments routed through a Monaco intermediary.

And one recurring shell company linked to Martin’s office.

Adrian’s name appeared beside account authorization requests.

Vanessa’s appeared beside luxury transfers.

Martin’s signature appeared where my mother’s should have been.

Some signatures were disputed.

Some metadata incomplete.

Enough to investigate.

Not enough to win alone.

The most important file was the final trust.

It named me controlling beneficiary of Hart Maritime voting shares.

But the document remained legally vulnerable unless we could prove Martin knew about it and deliberately concealed it.

Naomi wanted patience.

I wanted confrontation.

“What if they destroy everything first?”

“They think they already have.”

The Celestine’s servers copied account activity to federal investigators through a sealed whistleblower arrangement my mother established before her death.

Nothing happened publicly because the agents needed current acts.

Attempts.

Transfers.

Communications.

People moving together.

Then Vanessa announced her wedding venue.

The Hart Cliffs estate.

Overlooking the precise stretch of ocean where the Celestine could anchor outside private-property limits and remain visible to every guest.

Naomi looked at the invitation.

“They just selected the courtroom.”

I looked at the embossed names.

Vanessa Sterling and Adrian Vale.

“They selected the audience too.”
