Chapter 8

The sails illuminated before Vanessa reached the altar again.
The quartet stopped mid-note.
At first, guests thought the display was part of the ceremony.
Golden lines crossed the white fabric.
Then became account pathways.
Photographs appeared.
Signatures.
Corporate logos.
Port routes.
Offshore islands linked by moving financial channels.
No readable text from the cliff.
But no one needed details to recognize exposure.
Adrian stared toward the ocean.
“What is that?”
Martin stood too quickly.
His chair struck the stone behind him.
He pulled out his phone.
No service.
The venue network had not been blocked.
It had been preserved under federal authority, with specific devices isolated from remote deletion access.
Vanessa looked toward the control booth.
Then toward the yacht.
Then at me.
The confidence left her face in layers.
First confusion.
Then recognition.
Then fear.
She had seen one of the account diagrams before.
The shell structure connected to the card she used for the wedding.
The chart displayed no numbers.
Only relationships.
Enough for her to know the investigators had the original files.
Adrian moved away from the altar.
“Martin, what did you do?”
Martin snapped, “Do not speak.”
That answer exposed hierarchy better than any diagram.
Adrian was not the planner.
He was a participant who had believed proximity would protect him.
Guests began raising phones.
Several board members stepped away from Martin.
One trustee removed a document from his inner pocket and stared at it as though wondering what he had signed.
Then federal agents entered.
Professional.
Controlled.
Weapons secured but visible.
They moved from both side aisles and positioned themselves near the altar, venue exits, and Martin’s row.
The champagne bottle slipped from Vanessa’s hand.
It rolled across the white runner.
An agent raised one palm.
“Step away from the altar.”
Adrian obeyed immediately.
Martin did not.

That difference would matter later.
