Chapter 9

Martin attempted authority.
“This is a private event.”
The lead agent looked at him.
“No, sir.”
Martin’s face tightened.
“You are disrupting a lawful ceremony.”
“We are preserving an active financial-crime scene.”
A murmur moved through the guests.
Vanessa stared at me.
“You did this.”
I touched the soaked satin across my lap.
“No.”
“My mother did.”
That was the truth in every meaningful way.
She designed the accounts.
The yacht.
The backups.
The trigger.
I merely survived long enough to activate them.
Adrian stepped toward me.
An agent blocked him.
“Clara, listen to me.”
I looked at him.
“You had months.”
“Martin threatened me.”
Vanessa turned sharply.
“What?”
Adrian realized too late that panic had rearranged his loyalties.
Martin’s expression hardened.
“Say nothing.”
The lead agent looked between them.
“Good advice.”
Vanessa’s veil moved in the ocean wind.
She suddenly looked less like a bride than a woman trapped inside ceremonial fabric.
“What does the yacht have?” she asked.
I said nothing.
Her eyes dropped to the transmitter in my hand.
“Is that connected to the accounts?”
Still nothing.
“Clara.”
The cruelty had left her voice.
Now it carried appeal.
Sisterhood invoked only when needed.
She stepped toward my wheelchair.
The agent moved between us.
Vanessa stopped.
Behind her, the yacht display changed.
A photograph of my mother appeared briefly, followed by the image of a sealed trust folder and several blurred authorization chains.
Martin went pale.
That reaction told Naomi, watching from the control room, that he recognized the original document.
Not a copy.
Not a draft.
The trust he claimed did not exist.
Vanessa followed his gaze.
“Dad?”
He did not answer.
She looked back at me.
“What was the wedding transfer for?”
“The transfer you authorized?”
Her lips parted.
She had not expected me to know the timing.
I lifted the transmitter slightly.
“That was the bait.”
Vanessa stared at the sails.
Then at the agents.
Then at the champagne dripping from my gown.
She had wanted the wedding to prove she had replaced me.

Instead, she had gathered every required witness around the transaction.
