Chapter 6

I accepted Vanessa’s wedding invitation publicly.

She called within an hour.

“You’re actually coming?”

“You invited me.”

“I thought you would have dignity.”

“I thought you would have originality.”

She exhaled sharply.

“You cannot ruin this for me.”

“I haven’t done anything.”

That was the truth.

Not yet.

Vanessa wanted me visible because humiliation required a witness.

She had selected my silver satin gown through a stylist she controlled.

She arranged my seat beside the aisle instead of with the family.

She refused to provide an accessible route to the reception terrace until my attorney threatened an injunction.

Every detail was intended to remind guests I occupied space only through accommodation.

I allowed it.

Because each email entered the evidence archive.

Adrian called me privately two nights before the ceremony.

His voice sounded almost gentle.

“You should not come.”

“Vanessa says I should.”

“She wants closure.”

“She wants an audience.”

He went quiet.

Then said, “There are things you don’t understand.”

“Explain them.”

“I can’t.”

“About my mother’s accounts?”

The silence changed.

He knew.

I recorded the call.

“Clara, whatever you’re doing, stop.”

“Why?”

“Because Martin will not let anyone take the company from him.”

Not Vanessa.

Not us.

Him.

Adrian realized the mistake immediately.

He ended the call.

Naomi listened to the recording twice.

“It connects him to knowledge of Martin’s control.”

“Not the crash.”

“No.”

“Not my mother’s death.”

“No.”

“Then it’s not enough.”

“It is enough for agents to attend the wedding.”

Federal investigators prepared quietly.

The venue staff received instructions through the property trust.

The Celestine moved into position before sunrise.

Its projection system was tested against the sails.

The files remained unreadable from a distance by design.

Guests would see patterns, images, and relationships.

Agents would receive the full encrypted package simultaneously.

The display was not evidence presentation.

It was the signal that the transfer had completed.

Vanessa believed the yacht was rented as part of her wedding backdrop.
