Chapter 2

The condo had belonged to Sofia long before Javier.

She bought it at twenty-four with money from her design business and a small inheritance from my mother.

It was not a palace.

Two bedrooms.

High ceilings.

A balcony overlooking downtown Dallas.

A kitchen too small for Elena’s cooking and too bright for my early-morning coffee.

But it was hers.

That mattered.

Sofia chose every cabinet handle.

Every curtain.

Every plant on the balcony.

She signed every mortgage document herself.

I still remember the day she called me after closing.

“Dad, I have keys.”

She sounded stunned.

As if the world had finally placed something solid in her palm.

I drove over with a toolbox and spent the afternoon installing shelves she could have paid someone else to install.

She kept saying, “You don’t have to.”

I kept saying, “I know.”

That condo was not just real estate.

It was proof.

Proof that my daughter could build a life no one handed her.

Proof that she did not need a husband, a father, or anyone else to rescue her.

Maybe that was why Javier’s family wanted it.

Carmen noticed the condo before she noticed Sofia.

The first time Javier brought his mother over, Carmen walked through the rooms like a buyer at an inspection.

She touched the marble counter.

Checked the view.

Asked about the building reserve fund.

Then she smiled and said, “Javier will be comfortable here.”

Sofia laughed politely.

“He already has his place.”

Carmen’s smile did not change.

“Marriage changes things.”

I was there that day.

I did not like her.

I liked Javier less after watching him fail to correct her.

But Sofia loved him.

Or believed she did.

That is sometimes the same thing until pain teaches the difference.

Two weeks before the wedding, Sofia called Elena sounding uneasy.

“Javier wants me to add him to the title after the honeymoon.”

Elena asked what I would have asked.

“Do you want to?”

“No.”

“Then don’t.”

Sofia went quiet.

“Carmen says it will look insulting.”

I heard Elena’s answer from across the kitchen.

“Good.”

I smiled then.

I should have been more worried.

People who use shame to get property do not stop because someone says no.

They only change location.

On the wedding night, they chose the honeymoon suite.

No witnesses.

No cameras they knew about.

No parents nearby.
