Chapter 9

Carmen did not expect consequences.
That became obvious at the preliminary hearing.
She arrived in a charcoal dress, hair perfect, expression injured.
Javier sat beside her in a dark suit, wedding band still on his finger.
Sofia did not wear hers.
She wore a black blazer over a high-collar blouse and kept her hands folded in her lap.
The bruises had faded to yellow at the edges.
Enough to show healing.
Not enough to hide what had happened.
The prosecutor presented the medical report.
The title flag.
The hotel footage.
The recovered folder.
The notary’s attempted shredding.
The bridesmaid’s statement.
Then Sofia’s recorded hospital statement.
Javier stared down through most of it.
Carmen stared at Sofia.
Not with remorse.
With accusation.
As if Sofia had failed by surviving in public.
When the prosecutor played Javier’s text, the courtroom went silent.
Don’t make this bigger.
Mom got emotional.
Come back so we can fix it.
Then the next one.
The notary is still here.
Don’t embarrass me.
Javier closed his eyes.
His attorney looked tired.
Carmen’s attorney argued she had been “overcome by family stress.”
The judge looked at the folder.
“Family stress does not prepare a quitclaim deed.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Clean.
Exact.
Impossible to soften.
Bail conditions were tightened.
No contact with Sofia.
No contact with me or Elena.
No access to the condo building.
No attempt to file any property document involving Sofia.
The notary agreed to cooperate before the hearing ended.
That cracked Javier.
Not visibly to everyone.
But I saw it.
His shoulders dropped.
He understood the notary would not protect him.
Carmen still did not.
She turned as officers escorted her out and spoke toward Sofia.
“You are destroying your own marriage.”
Sofia stood slowly.
The courtroom watched.
Her voice was quiet.
“No.”
“You did that before I got home.”
Carmen’s face changed.
Not because of guilt.
Because Sofia no longer sounded afraid.
After court, Sofia walked outside between Elena and me.
For the first time since the wedding, she lifted her face toward the sun.
Not healed.
Not whole.
May you like
But no longer hidden.
