Chapter 7

Carmen requested to speak to Sofia.

The answer was no.

Then she requested to speak to me.

The answer was also no.

Then she sent a message through Javier’s cousin.

Colonel Hart, this has been exaggerated.

Women in families argue.

Do not destroy your daughter’s marriage over confusion.

I read it once.

Then forwarded it to Detective Blake.

Javier sent nothing.

Not at first.

That told me he was either ashamed or being advised by counsel.

By noon, we learned it was counsel.

His attorney released a statement calling the incident a “private domestic disagreement involving post-wedding stress.”

Sofia was still in the hospital when she saw it online.

Her face went empty.

Not sad.

Empty.

I recognized that as shock returning for a second pass.

Elena took the phone away gently.

“Don’t read their lies before breakfast.”

Sofia whispered, “People will believe him.”

I sat beside the bed.

“Some will.”

She looked at me.

“Then what do I do?”

“Tell the truth once.”

“To who?”

“To the people with authority.”

“Not to the crowd.”

I learned that late in life.

Crowds feed on pain.

Institutions can fail too, but paper trails, photographs, medical reports, hotel footage, title flags, and police folders do not care about charm.

We met with Detective Blake that afternoon.

Sofia gave her full statement.

Slowly.

With pauses.

Sometimes through tears.

She described Carmen closing the suite door.

Javier standing outside it.

Carmen saying a wife’s property belonged to the marriage.

The notary sitting near the desk.

The first grab.

The threats.

The demand to keep bruises beneath the dress line.

Detective Blake asked, “Who said avoid the face?”

Sofia’s hands twisted in the hospital blanket.

“Javier.”

“Exact words?”

Sofia swallowed.

“He said, ‘Not her face, Mom. People saw her tonight.’”

Elena covered her mouth.

I stared at the floor until the rage passed through my body without taking command.

Detective Blake wrote it down.

Then she looked at Sofia.

“That sentence matters.”

Sofia whispered, “Why?”

“Because it shows awareness.”

“Not panic.”

“Not confusion.”

“Concealment.”

Sofia breathed out.

For the first time, the law had named what her heart already knew.

Her husband had not failed to protect her.

He had helped manage the damage.
