Chapter 8

The wedding guests became important.

That surprised Sofia.

She thought they had only seen flowers, vows, music, and cake.

But people notice small wrong things at weddings.

A bride disappearing after the reception toast.

A mother-in-law insisting on escorting her upstairs.

A groom standing outside the suite door instead of joining guests.

A notary entering the elevator with a leather case.

A hotel server hearing Carmen say, “She will sign before morning.”

One bridesmaid came forward first.

Her name was Rachel.

She had been Sofia’s college roommate and had cried through the ceremony.

Rachel told Detective Blake that Carmen pulled her aside at the reception and asked whether Sofia “ever got stubborn about money.”

Rachel thought it was strange.

Then she saw the folder.

Then she saw Javier take Sofia’s phone “so she could relax.”

That part changed the case again.

They had isolated her.

Removed communication.

Prepared documents.

Used physical force.

Attempted to record a property transfer.

Ruth called it a coercive asset seizure attempt.

Detective Blake called it criminal conspiracy.

Elena called it what mothers call things when legal words are too clean.

“Evil.”

I did not correct her.

Rachel came to the hospital with flowers the next day.

Sofia looked embarrassed.

That broke my heart.

She still thought other people seeing her hurt was something she needed to manage.

Rachel sat beside her and said, “I should have checked on you.”

Sofia shook her head.

“You didn’t know.”

“I knew something felt wrong.”

“That is not the same.”

Rachel cried.

Sofia reached for her hand.

My daughter, bruised and betrayed on her wedding night, was still comforting someone else.

I stepped into the hallway.

Elena followed.

“You okay?”

“No.”

She leaned against the wall beside me.

“Me neither.”

I looked at my wife.

For thirty years, she had been the soft place in our family.

But that day, her eyes were hard.

“I want them ruined,” she said.

It was the first time I had heard Elena say anything like that.

I took her hand.

“They will answer.”

“That is not the same.”

“No.”

I looked through the window at Sofia.

“But it is where we start.”
