Chapter 4

The first call went to Ruth Caldwell.
Ruth had been my attorney since a defense contractor tried to cheat veterans out of housing funds ten years earlier.
She answered at 3:19 a.m. with no warmth and full attention.
“Alexander?”
“My daughter was assaulted.”
“Where?”
“Dallas hotel.”
“By whom?”
“Her mother-in-law.”
A pause.
Then Ruth said, “Start from property.”
That is why I trusted her.
She understood violence often follows money.
I gave her the condo address, Javier’s full name, Carmen’s full name, and the phrase Sofia had used.
Refusing to sign over my condo.
Ruth did not gasp.
She typed.
I could hear it.
“Is Sofia safe?”
“With us.”
“Medical?”
“Next.”
“Photographs?”
“Taking them now.”
“Title transfer?”
“Possibly attempted tonight.”
“Email me authorization.”
“Already doing it.”
While Ruth worked, Elena took pictures of Sofia’s bruises with shaking hands.
Not because she wanted to.
Because evidence disappears faster than outrage.
Sofia cried when Elena photographed her arms.
I looked away only when she asked me to.
That was important.
Protection does not mean ownership of someone’s pain.
At 3:31 a.m., Ruth called back.
“There is a pending title inquiry on the condo.”
My jaw locked.
“How pending?”
“Prepared but not recorded.”
“Can you freeze it?”
“I can flag the title, notify the county office, and send emergency preservation notices.”
“Do it.”
“I already did.”
That was Ruth.
I almost thanked her.
Then Sofia made a small sound from the couch.
Her phone had lit up.
Javier.
Eight missed calls.
Then a message.
Baby, don’t make this bigger.
Mom got emotional.
Come back so we can fix it.
Sofia stared at the screen.
I saw the exact moment fear tried to pull her backward.
I had seen soldiers look at danger that way.
Not wanting it.
But recognizing it.
I held out my hand.
“May I see?”
She gave me the phone.
I read the message twice.
Then another arrived.
The notary is still here.
Don’t embarrass me.
There it was.
He was not sorry.
He was delayed.
I handed the phone to Ruth’s secure line.
“Send police to the hotel.”
Ruth asked, “You sure?”
I looked at Sofia’s bruised arms.
“No.”
May you like
“I am late.”
