Chapter 6

Police reached the hotel before Carmen and Javier could leave.
Barely.
The lobby camera later showed them crossing the marble floor at 4:36 a.m.
Carmen wore a silver wrap over her formal dress.
Javier carried the document folder.
Not Sofia’s shoes.
Not her torn veil.
Not her overnight bag.
The folder.
That detail stayed with me.
When people run after hurting someone, they carry what matters most to them.
Javier carried paperwork.
Two officers stopped them near the glass entrance.
Carmen tried indignation first.
“This is a family misunderstanding.”
Then status.
“My son was married tonight.”
Then offense.
“How dare you humiliate us in public?”
The officers asked for the folder.
Javier hesitated.
That hesitation cost him.
Detective Blake told me later one officer saw the condo address through the top page when Javier shifted his hand.
They secured the folder.
Inside were three prepared documents.
A spousal property agreement.
A quitclaim deed.
A limited power of attorney.
All dated the wedding day.
All naming Sofia’s condo.
All requiring her signature.
There was also a notary stamp.
The notary, a woman named Patricia Vale, had not waited once police arrived.
She was found in the hotel business center shredding draft pages.
Hotel staff had already unplugged the shredder.
Sometimes ordinary employees become heroes because they notice panic.
At 5:30 a.m., Ruth called me at the hospital.
“They have the folder.”
“I know.”
“The title flag is in place.”
“Good.”
“No transfer can record without court review now.”
I looked through the glass at Sofia sleeping under a hospital blanket, Elena beside her in a chair.
“And Javier?”
“Detained.”
“Carmen?”
“Also.”
I closed my eyes.
Not from relief.
From the weight of not having failed completely.
Ruth said, “Alexander?”
“Yes.”
“Do not go to the hotel.”
I looked toward the exit.
She knew me too well.
“Your job is to be the father in the room, not the colonel in the parking lot.”
I hated that she was right.
So I stayed.
When Sofia woke, I told her only what she needed first.
“The condo is safe.”
She cried then.
Not because of the bruises.
May you like
Because somewhere inside all that pain, she had believed they might still take her home too.
