Chapter 1 - The Neck Brace at the Wedding

Bride Ripped Off Her Groom’s Father’s Neck Brace Until Her Secret Scheme Thundered Through the Wedding Speakers.

Richard Mercer stood beside the bride and groom like a stain someone had failed to remove from the wedding.

His charcoal suit was old, wrinkled, and marked near the sleeve.

His patterned tie hung loose.

A cheap neck brace circled his throat.

A wooden cane trembled beneath one weathered hand.

Around him, the Bel Air Regent luxury hotel glowed with chandeliers, white floral arches, marble corridors, and three hundred guests dressed in black tie.

Penelope looked perfect.

Jeweled tiara.

Diamond earrings.

White beaded gown.

A bouquet of white roses in one hand.

Her smile had vanished the moment Richard stepped near the aisle.

Now she stood inches from him, eyes bright with disgust.

“You pathetic old leech. You came here to beg.”

Before Adrian could react, Penelope grabbed Richard’s cheap neck brace and ripped it from his throat.

Gasps cut through the ballroom.

Richard staggered backward toward the marble wall.

His cane struck the floor.

But he did not fall.

Penelope slapped him.

The sound echoed beneath the chandeliers.

Adrian lunged forward and caught her wrist too late.

“Penelope, stop.”

Richard slowly lifted his head.

No rage.

No pleading.

Only a calm so cold it unsettled everyone closest to him.

His eyes dropped to the jeweled brooch pinned to his lapel.

A small, glittering ornament everyone had dismissed as sentimental decoration.

Then he looked past Penelope, across the ballroom, toward Evelyn Shaw near the audiovisual booth.

“Evelyn… play it.”

Evelyn raised her phone.

Pressed one button.

The wedding music died.

Then Penelope’s recorded voice filled the ballroom speakers.

“After tonight, Adrian signs everything over to me.”

The guests turned toward the bride as one.

Adrian’s face drained of color.

Penelope lifted one hand toward Richard, furious and terrified, but no words came.

Richard calmly removed the brooch from his lapel and held it between them.
