Chapter 8 - The Second File Remains Closed

Evelyn’s folder stayed shut.

That was what made it unbearable.

Penelope could imagine what was inside.

Adrian could too.

The guests could not, but speculation spread through silence faster than rumor.

Richard did not need to open the folder.

Not yet.

Penelope’s fear of it already testified.

She stepped toward Evelyn.

“Give that to me.”

Adrian caught her arm before she reached the attorney.

This time, his grip was firm.

Not harmful.

Final.

Penelope looked at his hand on her wrist and went still.

“Let go.”

He did.

But he did not apologize.

Evelyn did not move.

Richard watched his son carefully.

Adrian’s hands dropped to his sides, fingers flexing with the effort of not falling apart in front of everyone.

He looked at Penelope.

“What did you mean by everything?”

Again, the question.

Again, no answer.

Penelope’s eyes filled.

“Adrian, please. We can talk privately.”

Richard’s voice cut in.

“Private is where this began.”

Penelope glared at him.

“You don’t know anything.”

Richard held up the brooch.

“I know enough to ask better questions.”

Adrian turned toward him.

“Dad…”

The word softened the room.

Dad.

Not Richard.

Not old man.

Not embarrassment.

Dad.

Penelope heard it and looked furious.

“You are choosing him over your wife?”

Adrian stared at her.

“You are not my wife yet.”

The ballroom inhaled.

No cancellation was announced.

No final decision.

But the word yet changed the temperature of the wedding.

Penelope’s face went white.

Richard closed his eyes for half a second.

Not triumph.

Relief mixed with pain.

Evelyn’s expression remained controlled.

A wedding planner near the floral arch looked ready to faint but did not move.

The chandeliers continued glowing.

The white roses continued framing the aisle.

Everything beautiful remained in place, making the ugliness more visible.

Penelope lifted the bouquet as if she might throw it.

Then lowered it.

The camera, the guests, the attorney, the father, the groom—too many witnesses now.

Her hand shook.

Richard looked at the fallen neck brace on the marble.

Then back at her.

“You wanted me bent.”

His voice was quiet.

May you like

“But you needed me silent.”
