Chapter 9 - Now They Know Why I Came
Richard picked up the cheap neck brace from the floor.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Adrian stepped forward to help.
Richard raised one hand.
Not harshly.
Just enough.
He wanted to stand on his own for this part.
The brace hung from his fingers, bent slightly where Penelope had torn it away.
He looked at it for a moment, then placed it on the nearest marble ledge beside the fallen rose.
A small display of two things Penelope had tried to discard.
Weakness.
Beauty.
Both now evidence.
He turned back to the room.
The brooch remained in his other hand.
“Now they know why I came.”
The words did not explain the whole scheme.
They did not reveal ownership.
They did not reveal trust documents.
They did not reveal guarantees.
They did not reveal punishment.
They did not end the wedding in a final sentence.
But they gave the room a moral answer.
Why had Richard come dressed poorly?
Why wear the brace?
Why endure the insult?
Why let Penelope speak?
Because Adrian needed to hear what love sounded like when it thought power had left the room.
Penelope shook her head.
“No. No, this is not real.”
Adrian looked at her.
“It sounded real.”
Her eyes filled with rage.
“You are humiliating me at my wedding.”
Richard’s face went still.
“You humiliated me first.”
“That is different.”
The words escaped before she could stop them.
The ballroom heard them.
Adrian’s face changed again.
Different.
Because Richard was old.
Because he looked poor.
Because he seemed weak.
Because she believed his humiliation would not cost her anything.
Penelope’s mouth closed.
Too late.
Evelyn glanced at Richard.
He nodded once, almost imperceptibly.
She touched her phone again.
Penelope’s recorded voice did not replay.
But the ballroom speakers hummed softly, reminding everyone that it could.
Penelope’s bouquet lowered.
Her shoulders trembled.
Adrian stepped farther away from her.
No formal ending.
