Chapter 7 - Three Hundred Witnesses

Three hundred wedding guests had come to witness vows.

Instead, they witnessed character.

That was what Richard had counted on.

Not a confession in a private room.

Not an argument in a hallway.

Not a whispered warning Adrian could dismiss as bitterness from an aging father.

A public moment.

A live room.

A bride unable to resist humiliating the man she thought had arrived powerless.

The guests were not chaotic.

They did not scream.

They did not rush the aisle.

They did not crowd the couple.

They watched with the restraint of wealthy people terrified to be associated with the wrong side of a scandal.

A senator’s wife lowered her eyes.

An investor whispered into no one’s ear and stopped halfway.

A relative of Penelope’s pressed a hand to her chest.

One of Adrian’s colleagues stared at the brooch like he expected it to speak again.

Richard turned the brooch slowly in his fingers.

Penelope followed the movement, hypnotized by the thing that had betrayed her.

“You recorded me before this,” she said.

Richard’s eyes lifted.

“Yes.”

Adrian looked stricken.

Penelope pounced on that pain.

“See? He was planning this before I touched him.”

Richard nodded.

“I was.”

The honesty stunned her.

He continued.

“I planned to learn whether the woman marrying my son spoke differently when she thought the old man had no leverage.”

Penelope’s lips trembled.

“You are cruel.”

Richard’s face softened with exhaustion.

“No. I am late.”

The sentence silenced Adrian.

Late.

Late to see.

Late to interfere.

Late to protect.

Late to reveal.

Not everything behind that word was explained.

But Adrian heard enough to feel the weight of it.

Evelyn stepped closer to Richard.

“Do you want the second file ready?”

Penelope made a sharp sound.

“No.”

Everyone heard the panic.

Richard did not look at Evelyn.

“Not yet.”

Not yet.

The phrase was a locked door.

Behind it, documents waited.

Maybe more recordings.

Maybe signatures.

Maybe guarantees.

Maybe truths the story would not reveal.

Penelope stared at Richard with naked fear.

Adrian stared at Penelope as if he had finally seen fear where love should have been.
