Chapter 5 - Evelyn at the Sound Booth

Evelyn Shaw had chosen her position carefully.

Near the audiovisual booth.

Close enough to the speakers.

Far enough not to be noticed.

Visible only when Richard needed her.

She had watched Penelope from the moment the bride crossed the marble corridor.

The attorney had not flinched when the neck brace was torn away.

She had not gasped at the slap.

She had waited.

That patience now terrified Penelope.

“Who are you?” Penelope demanded.

Evelyn did not give the answer Penelope wanted.

Not a title.

Not a threat.

Not a full explanation.

She only held the small leather folder against her black evening gown and said, “Someone who listens carefully.”

Richard’s eyes flicked toward her.

Almost amused.

Adrian looked between them.

“You two planned this?”

Richard’s face softened for the first time.

“I hoped I was wrong.”

Penelope seized on the line.

“You see? He came to trap me.”

Richard turned back to her.

“I came to be insulted honestly.”

A murmur moved through the ballroom.

Penelope’s expression twisted.

“That is disgusting.”

“No,” Richard said. “What you did when you thought no one important was watching was disgusting.”

The word important landed with weight.

Because Penelope had been surrounded by guests the entire time.

But not, in her mind, by people who mattered more than her future.

She had assumed Richard did not matter.

His suit did not matter.

His cane did not matter.

His brace did not matter.

His dignity did not matter.

Until the brooch spoke.

Adrian stared at his bride’s hand, the one that had slapped Richard.

Her fingers curled instinctively around the bouquet.

He took another step back.

Penelope noticed and panicked.

“Adrian, please. Your father is manipulating you.”

Richard’s eyes lowered.

For one second, pain crossed his face.

Then calm returned.

“I did not make you say the words.”

Evelyn tapped her phone once.

The ballroom speakers gave a faint hum.

Penelope jerked toward the sound.

The recording did not play again.

Not yet.

But the threat of replay was enough.

Her face drained.
