Chapter 6 - The Cane Does Not Tremble

Richard’s cane had stopped trembling.

Adrian noticed it at the same time Penelope did.

When Richard first entered the marble corridor, the cane seemed necessary.

Each step looked painful.

The neck brace made his posture seem fragile.

His loosened tie made him look like a man who had lost the ability to care how he appeared.

Now the cane rested lightly against the floor.

Not fake.

Not useless.

But no longer a symbol of helplessness.

Richard stood with quiet balance, brooch in one hand, cane in the other, his reddened cheek turned toward the chandeliers.

Penelope stared at him.

“You lied about being weak.”

Richard answered calmly.

“No. You lied about being kind.”

The guests reacted softly.

A collective inhale.

A shifting of shoes.

A tightening of mouths.

Penelope’s face hardened.

“You don’t get to judge me.”

Richard looked around the luxury ballroom.

“Apparently, I am not the only one.”

Her eyes darted to the guests.

Executives.

Investors.

Politicians.

Relatives.

All dressed for celebration.

Now all witnessing evaluation.

Adrian whispered, “Penelope, apologize.”

She spun toward him.

“For what?”

The question destroyed whatever protection remained.

Adrian’s face changed.

“For what?”

His voice was almost a whisper.

He looked at his father’s cheek, the neck brace on the floor, the rose beside the cane, and the woman in the white gown asking what exactly needed apology.

Penelope realized too late that the question had exposed her more than the recording.

“I mean—obviously I regret the misunderstanding.”

Richard’s expression did not move.

Evelyn closed her folder with a soft snap.

The sound echoed.

Penelope flinched.

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

“What else is there?”

She did not answer.

Richard did not answer.

The folder remained closed.

The hidden materials stayed hidden.

The final consequences stayed outside the moment.

But the silence told Adrian enough to fear that the recording was only the beginning.

Penelope stepped toward him.

“Adrian, listen to me.”

He lifted one hand.

Not touching her.

Stopping her.

The same gesture he should have made earlier.

She froze.
