Chapter 11 - THE TWO O’CLOCK TRANSPORT The hospital did not cancel the transfer request.
Detective Quinn wanted Dana and Trevor to believe it remained active.
At 1:48 a.m., a private ambulance entered the service bay.
Its markings appeared legitimate. The driver and attendant wore matching uniforms and carried digital credentials that passed the first security scan.
Neither person was Trevor or Dana.
They were contract medical workers hired through an online staffing agency three hours earlier.
The order instructed them to collect Noah and deliver him to a transport team waiting near Cincinnati.
They believed the transfer was real.
Inside the ambulance, police found a sealed patient packet.
It listed Noah as Baby Boy Holt.
The mother’s name was Dana Holt.
The father’s name was blank.
The forged record did more than authorize transport.
It attempted to erase Ethan and Emily entirely.
The contractors cooperated immediately. Their hiring messages came from an administrator using Dr. Collins’s name and voice.
A synthetic recording instructed them not to discuss the transfer with the parents because of an active child-protection investigation.
Dana understood exactly which professional language discouraged questions.
Police traced the online account to a motel outside Dayton.
Trevor was arrested in the parking lot.
Dana escaped through a maintenance corridor minutes earlier.
Trevor demanded a lawyer and refused to reveal her destination.
His phone contained one photograph taken that morning.
Dana stood beside an infant crib in an unknown room.
The crib was empty.
On the wall behind her hung a framed hospital birth certificate for Noah Holt.
“She’s preparing somewhere to take him,” Ethan said.
Quinn nodded.
“Or to make it appear she already did.”
Dana had created conflicting identities for Noah across hospital, county, and court systems. If she successfully removed him, every responding agency might search under a different name.
Susan Bell provided another piece of Graham’s archive.
A file called Continuity Plan instructed Dana to preserve the child if the guardianship conspiracy failed.
The wording never identified a destination.
It referred only to the original claimant.
David Hayes denied being that claimant.
Linda denied knowing the phrase.
Graham refused to answer.
Ashley finally remembered hearing Dana speak to someone during a late-night visit.
“She said Noah would go back to the woman who paid for the first record.”
“What woman?” Quinn asked.
“I don’t know.”
“Did you hear a name?”
Ashley concentrated.
“Marian.”
Emily’s face changed when she heard it.
Marian Hayes was her mother.
She had died when Emily was fourteen.
At least, that was what Emily believed.
Marian suffered injuries in a house fire and died days later at a private rehabilitation facility. Emily never saw her body. Robert handled the funeral while shielding his daughter from the details.
David Hayes repeatedly claimed Marian had signed documents supporting his ownership claim.
Robert said those signatures were forged.
After the fire, the documents disappeared.
Quinn searched historical records.
Marian’s death certificate had been filed by a young hospital clerk.
Linda Carter.
Before her nursing license was suspended, Linda had worked briefly at the rehabilitation facility where Marian supposedly died.
Ethan stared at his mother’s name.
“She knew Emily’s family before we ever met.”
Linda had always claimed she first met the Hayeses at Ethan and Emily’s engagement dinner.
