Chapter 23 - THE WOMAN WEARING DR. COLLINS’S FACE

Emily did not open the door.

She lifted Noah from the bassinet and stepped backward until the kitchen wall pressed against her shoulders.

The woman outside knocked three more times.

“Emily, it’s Maya. Let me in.”

The voice was perfect.

Not merely similar.

It carried Dr. Collins’s controlled rhythm, the slight exhaustion beneath each sentence, and the softness she used whenever Noah became restless.

Emily looked at the hallway camera.

The face was perfect too.

Same dark eyes.

Same short brown hair.

Same narrow scar above the right eyebrow.

But Dr. Collins never called herself Maya when speaking to patients.

She always said Doctor Collins.

“Tell me what you printed before Noah’s discharge,” Emily called through the locked door.

The woman paused.

“His medication schedule.”

Wrong.

Dr. Collins had printed every page of Noah’s chart herself because Emily no longer trusted digital records.

Emily pressed the silent emergency button beneath the kitchen counter.

The woman outside tilted her head.

“You think Detective Quinn will arrive before the nursery moves?”

Emily’s blood went cold.

The hallway camera changed.

For one second, it no longer showed the apartment corridor.

It displayed the hidden nursery from the earlier call.

Rows of bassinets stretched beneath dim lights. White bracelets circled every infant’s wrist.

NOAH CARTER.

Dana Holt, Karen Holt, and Aaron West remained tied to chairs near the wall.

Dr. Collins stood beside an incubator with both hands restrained behind her back.

The infant wearing Ethan’s blue hoodie began crying.

The woman outside continued.

“Open the door, and the doctor stays alive.”

“No.”

“Then the babies leave before police identify the building.”

“You want me to believe opening this door will stop you?”

“I want Noah’s blood.”

Emily held her son closer.

The request revealed the purpose.

The continuity system possessed copied charts, stored samples, false birth certificates, and recycled names.

But Noah’s fresh blood remained the strongest proof connecting the Carter and Hayes branches.

Without it, every reserved infant could be challenged.

With it, the private nursery could manufacture new claims for years.

Emily approached the intercom.

“You are not Dr. Collins.”

The woman smiled into the camera.

“No.”

She pressed two fingers beneath her jaw.

The skin moved.

A thin seam appeared near her ear.

She peeled away part of the face.

Silicone stretched from her cheek, revealing older skin beneath it.

The woman’s real hair was silver-blond.

A scar crossed her left cheek—the opposite side from Miriam’s.

Emily recognized her from the nursery feed.

“Who are you?”

The woman removed the rest of the mask.

“Caroline West.”

The name belonged to the maternity nurse whose credentials had been recycled for thirty-four years.

The original Caroline had disappeared before Aaron West entered his first placement.

Aaron believed Miriam knew what happened to her.

Caroline had not disappeared.

She had become the private continuity system’s most useful identity.

“I watched your family use mothers and children like signatures,” Caroline said. “I learned to use the signatures first.”

“You kidnapped Dr. Collins.”

“She discovered the second nursery.”

“You took babies.”

“I moved them before families could weaponize them.”

“You gave them all the same name.”

“A temporary name protects a child from ownership.”

“No. It makes the child easier for you to own.”

Caroline’s expression hardened.

Emily heard movement in the stairwell.

Detective Quinn’s officers were approaching without sirens.

Caroline heard them too.

She raised a small black device.

“The moment they arrest me, every infant transport activates.”

Emily did not know whether the threat was real.

That uncertainty was the weapon.

Caroline expected her to open the door to prevent a possible consequence.

Emily looked at Noah.

Everyone in the conspiracy had justified a decision by saying there was no time to ask her.

She would not repeat the pattern because the frightened woman outside offered another emergency.

“Call the police,” Emily said loudly enough for the hallway microphone.

Caroline’s eyes narrowed.

“They are already here.”

Quinn appeared behind her with two officers.

“Drop the device.”

Caroline pressed the button.

Nothing exploded.

No alarm sounded.

Instead, the hidden nursery feed changed.

Red lights appeared above every bassinet.

TRANSPORT AUTHORIZED.

Caroline allowed officers to handcuff her.

She looked almost relieved.

“The building will be empty in twelve minutes.”

“Where is it?” Quinn demanded.

Caroline smiled.

“The same place Dr. Collins has spent six years pretending not to know.”

👉 Caroline West was captured outside Emily’s apartment, but her arrest activated the evacuation of the private nursery—and she claimed Dr. Collins had known about it for years.
