Chapter 3 - THE BEDROOM LOCK Police entered Ethan and Emily’s home under an emergency warrant.
The bedroom door could be locked from the hallway.
Ethan had never noticed because a decorative brass plate concealed the outer keyhole. Linda knew about it. The house had belonged to Ethan’s grandparents before he and Emily renovated it.
The key remained inside Linda’s purse.
Detective Quinn stood in the hallway while crime-scene technicians photographed the room.
Dirty diapers had been pushed beneath the crib.
Several prepared bottles sat untouched near the sink.
Emily’s water pitcher was empty.
The heating vent had been fully opened despite the mild early-fall weather, making the room several degrees warmer than the rest of the house.
Someone had created an environment where dehydration would worsen quickly.
In the kitchen, the refrigerator held enough formula and expressed milk to feed Noah for days.
Linda and Ashley had not lacked supplies.
They had withheld them.
The takeout containers Ethan saw in the hallway showed that both women had been eating normally.
A camera above the front door recorded every entrance and exit. The interior baby monitor, however, had been disconnected shortly after Ethan left for Cleveland.
Its power cord had been cut.
Ashley claimed Emily cut it during an argument.
Emily remained too weak to give a full account.
Ethan watched the search through photographs Detective Quinn sent to the hospital.
He recognized one item on the bedside table: a white envelope carrying the logo of Graham Pike’s law firm.
Inside was a mental-health evaluation form partially completed in Emily’s name.
The document claimed she had hallucinations, refused to feed her newborn, expressed fear that relatives would steal the baby, and posed an immediate danger to herself and Noah.
The form was dated the previous day.
A physician’s signature line remained blank.
Attached was a petition for emergency guardianship.
Proposed temporary guardian: Linda Carter.
Proposed co-caregiver: Ashley Carter.
The petition alleged Ethan worked unpredictable hours and could not safely supervise the child alone.
Ethan read the sentence again.
“They planned to take my son from both of us.”
Quinn nodded.
“The paperwork was drafted before you found them.”
“Why would Graham prepare it?”
“He says Linda contacted him because she feared Emily had postpartum psychosis.”
“Did he call a doctor?”
“No.”
“Did he call me?”
“No.”
“Did he call child services?”
“No.”
Graham had done nothing that would help Emily or Noah.
He prepared papers that transferred control.
The house search uncovered a second phone beneath the guest-room mattress. It belonged to Emily.
Linda had taken it after Ethan left.
All texts sent to him came from that device.
Ashley admitted typing several messages.
“Mom said Ethan would rush home and make everything worse.”
“You knew Emily wanted him called?” Quinn asked.
“She kept asking.”
“And you refused?”
Ashley looked down.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Mom said the doctor needed to see what Emily was like without Ethan rescuing her.”
There had been no doctor in the house.
Only Graham visited.
The front-door recording showed him entering at 11:42 p.m. the previous night and leaving forty-three minutes later.
He had told police he had not been inside for weeks.
The camera captured him carrying a clipboard and a medical bag.
