Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN OUTSIDE THE CRIB Hospital security locked every exit.
The disguised woman never reached Noah.
A nurse saw her standing outside the isolation room and asked for identification. She turned, shoved a supply cart into the nurse, and escaped through a stairwell.
Officers found the hood, mask, and stolen badge in a laundry chute.
Linda’s emerald ring remained missing.
Security footage captured the suspect entering the staff garage in a gray sedan registered to Graham Pike’s law firm.
Graham claimed the vehicle had been stolen.
His office had not reported it missing.
The driver’s face remained hidden, but Detective Quinn identified a likely suspect through height and movement.
Dana Holt.
A traffic camera later captured the sedan leaving Columbus on Interstate 70.
Police issued a statewide alert.
Emily continued recovering.
Her memory returned in fragments.
She remembered Linda offering tea after Ethan left.
She remembered waking with Noah crying and finding the bedroom door locked.
She remembered Ashley entering with soup, avoiding eye contact, and taking the baby’s full bottle away.
She remembered Graham holding her wrist.
Most disturbing was Dana’s visit.
The records clerk had worn scrubs and carried a clipboard. She examined Emily’s pupils, asked whether she heard voices, and told Linda to increase the dose because Emily remained “too coherent.”
Dana was not merely altering documents.
She helped manage the poisoning.
“She touched Noah?” Ethan asked.
Emily closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“What did she do?”
“She put something beneath his tongue.”
Ethan left the room before his rage frightened her.
Quinn found him in the stairwell.
“We will find her.”
“She put drugs in my seven-day-old son.”
“Yes.”
“And my mother watched.”
“Yes.”
Ethan struck the metal railing with the side of his fist.
“I trusted them because they were family.”
Quinn waited until he looked at her.
“Trust explains access. It does not transfer blame.”
Ethan had his own questions to answer.
Police found his signature on a temporary medical authorization giving Linda permission to make decisions for Emily and Noah during his Cleveland trip.
The form had been signed two weeks before the birth.
Ethan remembered it.
Linda brought several papers to the hospital waiting room while Emily was in labor. She said the document allowed her to speak with nurses if Ethan became unreachable.
He signed without reading every page.
Graham later added language authorizing Linda to request psychiatric assessment and emergency infant placement.
The added text appeared in a slightly different font.
His real signature gave the forgery legitimacy.
Emily listened while Ethan admitted it.
“You gave her medical authority over me?”
“I thought it was a contact form.”
“You didn’t ask me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because she said you had enough to worry about.”
Emily turned her face toward the window.
Again, another person decided secrecy would protect her.
Ethan did not ask for forgiveness.
He sat beside the bed and said, “I will spend the rest of my life proving that I can ask instead of assume.”
She looked at him.
“That may not be enough.”
“I know.”
In Ashley’s apartment, police recovered a nursery prepared for Noah.
Inside the closet hung a framed document.
It was a decorative birth certificate naming Ashley as Noah’s mother.
Dana had created it.
The father’s name line was blank.
Behind it, officers found an audio recorder.
Linda’s voice said:
“Once Emily is committed, Ethan will be forced to choose. He will sign away custody if he wants to avoid prison.”
Ashley asked, “What if he doesn’t?”
Graham answered:
May you like
“Then the accident becomes a family tragedy instead of a guardianship case.”
