Several entries had been altered after discharge.
The original chart showed a healthy newborn with normal feeding, stable weight, and attentive parents.
The revised version described Emily as anxious, resistant to nursing advice, and unable to recognize hunger cues. It claimed Ethan repeatedly left the maternity ward for long periods.
None of that appeared in nursing notes written during the hospital stay.
Dana inserted the new statements three days later.
She also created an incident report alleging Emily nearly dropped Noah while falling asleep.
The nurse whose name appeared on the report denied witnessing such an event.
Someone copied her signature.
A social-work referral had been drafted but never submitted.
The document recommended monitoring Emily for postpartum psychosis and placing Noah temporarily with a paternal relative.
Linda’s name appeared in the contact field.
Dr. Collins stared at the file.
“They were constructing a medical history that would make the bedroom look inevitable.”
Once Emily and Noah arrived dehydrated and sedated, the chart would tell doctors what to believe before anyone asked questions.
But Linda had underestimated Dr. Collins.
She had treated actual postpartum psychiatric emergencies. Emily’s physical signs did not fit the story.
A mother experiencing psychosis might fail to feed a baby.
She would not normally contain the same unprescribed sedative as the newborn.
Nor would a grandmother and aunt eat takeout outside a locked room while claiming not to notice deterioration.
The hospital suspended Dana and froze every record she touched.
Investigators found that she had accessed Noah’s chart thirty-four times in seven days.
She also viewed the hospital’s infant-discharge procedures and newborn security system.
“Why study discharge?” Ethan asked.
Quinn hesitated.
“Because the guardianship plan had a second stage.”
A draft hospital order authorized Noah’s release to Linda after emergency treatment. It listed Emily as transferred to an inpatient psychiatric unit and Ethan as prohibited from contact pending investigation.
The order had no judge’s signature.
But Dana had formatted it to resemble a valid court directive.
If no one checked carefully, Linda could have walked out of the hospital with Noah.
Ashley’s cooperation deepened.
She revealed that Linda purchased a bassinet, formula, diapers, and newborn clothes for her apartment.
“She said Noah would stay with me for a few days.”
“Did you believe it would be temporary?” Quinn asked.
Ashley did not answer.
Her silence was enough.
Ashley had suffered a late pregnancy loss eighteen months earlier. She rarely spoke about it. Linda told her that caring for Noah would help her heal.
Over time, temporary became permanent inside their private conversations.
Linda began referring to Emily as “the birth mother.”
She told Ashley that courts favored stable women over hysterical ones.
“She said Ethan would understand eventually,” Ashley whispered.
“What did you want?” Quinn asked.
Ashley cried harder.
“I wanted to hold him without giving him back.”
Her grief explained vulnerability.
It did not excuse conspiracy.
Ethan entered the interview room after Ashley agreed.
“You could have asked to be part of Noah’s life.”
“You and Emily never needed me.”
“That is not the same as taking my son.”
Ashley looked toward the wall.
“Mom said Emily’s family took everything from us.”
The trust property had once belonged to a printing company jointly owned by Emily’s father and Ethan’s late father. When the business failed, Robert Hayes purchased the property legally.
Linda believed Robert cheated her husband.
For years, she described the trust as stolen Carter family wealth.
Noah’s birth returned the asset to what she considered the wrong bloodline.
The guardianship plan was financial revenge disguised as family rescue.
Then the police received an alert from the hospital security system.
Someone had attempted to access Noah’s room using Dana Holt’s badge.
Dana was still missing.
The person on camera wore a hood and surgical mask.
But the hand reaching toward the crib carried Linda’s distinctive emerald ring.
