Chapter 5 - The Fund Behind the Empire

Apex Group looked invincible from the outside.

Glass offices.

National contracts.

Political allies.

Magazine covers featuring Spencer’s clean profile and careful quotes about growth.

But companies were not built only on press releases.

They were built on money that stayed when panic arrived.

Raymond Harrell’s fund had stayed.

During the acquisition that nearly failed.

During the debt restructuring that never reached the press.

During the expansion Spencer publicly called “bold” and privately called “necessary before the market notices.”

Raymond’s capital had been the spine beneath Spencer’s empire.

And Spencer had brought Paisley to the gala on the night that spine walked in wearing a black tuxedo and holding Phoebe’s hand.

Spencer finally moved.

He stepped toward Raymond.

“Mr. Harrell, there’s clearly been a misunderstanding.”

Raymond looked at him.

No anger.

No raised voice.

That was worse.

“Has there?”

Spencer swallowed.

“This is a personal matter.”

Phoebe turned then.

The crimson gown caught the light as she faced him fully.

“You made it public when you brought her here.”

Paisley flinched.

Spencer’s face tightened.

“Phoebe, not now.”

She almost smiled.

There it was.

The command.

The husband’s tone.

The one he used when he thought she would step back.

But cameras were flashing, investors were watching, and Raymond Harrell stood at her side.

Phoebe lifted her champagne flute slightly.

“Not now was what I told myself every time you corrected me in front of guests.”

Spencer’s eyes darted toward the crowd.

“Stop.”

“Every time you called me simple.”

His jaw hardened.

“Phoebe.”

“Every time you said I should be grateful.”

Paisley looked down.

Raymond’s expression remained still, but his hand closed once around the silver watch chain at his waist.

Phoebe did not continue.

She did not need to list every wound.

The pattern was enough.

Spencer stepped closer, lowering his voice.

“You are making a mistake.”

Phoebe met his eyes.

“No, Spencer. I married one.”

The sentence passed through the nearby guests like electricity.
