Chapter 9 - The Path Through the Guests

The guests parted before Phoebe and Raymond.
Not dramatically.
Not like servants clearing a royal path.
More like people stepping away from a line of consequence they did not want to block.
Phoebe walked slowly.
Crimson gown against marble.
Diamond necklace under chandeliers.
Champagne flute steady in her hand.
Raymond walked beside her with calm paternal pride.
Behind them, security maintained distance, disciplined and silent.
Spencer remained near the entrance with Paisley, motionless.
He looked like a man watching his own building tilt.
Paisley whispered, “What happens now?”
He did not answer.
Because the truth was, he did not know.
For years, Spencer had known what happened next.
He entered rooms.
People applauded.
Phoebe stayed quiet.
Paisley smiled.
Investors waited.
Money came.
Now Phoebe entered first.
The applause did not begin.
The silence was better.
It meant everyone was still recalculating.
Near the ballroom threshold, Raymond leaned toward Phoebe.
“You may leave whenever you want.”
Phoebe looked at the crowd.
“No.”
Her voice was low.
“I was told I would embarrass him here. I think I’ll stay.”
Raymond’s eyes warmed.
“That’s my girl.”
Spencer heard enough to flinch.
Phoebe turned back once.
Not to him fully.
Just enough.
Their eyes met across the marble entrance.
He tried to speak her name.
No sound came.
Paisley reached for him again, but stopped midway.
Her confidence had collapsed into self-preservation.
Phoebe saw that too.
Then she turned away.
A reporter’s flash lit the moment.
No text.
No headline.
Just light.
Spencer blinked as if struck.
The empire was not shown collapsing.
No stock screen appeared.
No board vote happened.
No formal fund withdrawal was displayed.
But every person in the gala understood one thing:
May you like
The woman Spencer thought would embarrass him had just become the only person in the room he could not afford to lose.
Read Chapter 10 👉 Because Phoebe entered the gala without explaining the final consequence, and the silence behind her told Spencer the damage had already begun.
