Chapter 7 - Not Anymore

Phoebe had rehearsed the words in the car.
Not the anger.
Anger required no rehearsal.
She had rehearsed restraint.
Raymond had sat beside her in the black luxury sedan while Cleveland lights slid across the windows.
“You do not owe him composure,” he had said.
Phoebe had looked at her reflection in the glass.
“No. But I owe myself control.”
Now she stood in the hotel entrance with Spencer’s empire watching, and those three words waited on her tongue.
Paisley had said it first.
Mr. Harrell… you own Apex’s largest fund.
The statement had landed with perfect terror because it was true enough to make Spencer pale.
Spencer turned to Raymond.
“Let’s not make business decisions in an entrance hall.”
Raymond’s face did not change.
“I am not making one here.”
Spencer’s shoulders eased slightly.
Phoebe looked at him and felt the last thread break.
He still thought the decision belonged to men in suits speaking privately.
He still thought she was a scene to manage before serious matters resumed.
She stepped closer.
“Not anymore.”
The words were soft.
Everyone near the entrance heard them.
Spencer stared at her.
“What does that mean?”
Phoebe did not explain.
No final documents.
No fund letter.
No legal outcome.
No collapse shown in full.
Only the sentence.
Only his reaction.
Raymond turned slightly toward one of his security men, who gave a small nod and closed the ballroom doors behind them with controlled quiet.
Spencer’s eyes snapped toward the sound.
The doors did not slam.
They sealed.
That was worse.
Paisley slowly released Spencer’s arm completely.
He looked down at the empty space where her hand had been.
Then back at Phoebe.
“Phoebe, listen to me.”
She shook her head once.
“I did.”
His lips parted.
“For years.”
The crowd remained silent.
That silence gave the sentence weight.
Spencer had always believed silence meant permission.

Tonight, silence meant everyone understood.
