PART 10

Henry came home first.

Grace followed nine days later.

Audrey carried them through the front door of Walter’s old Pasadena estate because her grandfather refused to let her return to any apartment Dominic had touched.

The nursery was soft green and cream.

Two bassinets stood beside the window.

No cameras for control.

Only monitors for breathing.

No legal papers on the bed.

Only blankets.

Walter met them in the hallway wearing a suit and hospital wristbands the nurses had given him as a joke.

He had refused to take them off until both babies came home.

Audrey laughed for the first time in weeks.

It hurt her incision.

She laughed anyway.

Dominic’s final fall came quietly.

No dramatic arrest in a boardroom.

No public screaming.

Just filings.

Audits.

Restitution.

Professional discipline.

His name removed from doors that had only opened because people thought he belonged near the Vale family.

Natalie gave birth two months later.

Audrey sent nothing.

No congratulations.

No curse.

Just silence.

That was all Natalie had earned.

The cream coat stayed in a sealed evidence box until the case ended.

Then Audrey made one decision Walter did not expect.

She had it cleaned.

Cut apart.

And sewn into two small memory blankets.

One for Henry.

One for Grace.

Walter stared when he saw them.

“You kept it?”

Audrey touched the soft fabric.

“I changed what it meant.”

That was the beginning of her real recovery.

Not revenge.

Reclaiming.

She reclaimed her name.

Her accounts.

Her body.

Her babies’ medical choices.

Her right to sleep without waiting for Dominic’s next cruelty.

Some nights she still heard his voice.

You and these runts are on your own.

On those nights, she walked to the nursery and looked at Henry and Grace breathing in the dark.

Not runts.

Fighters.

Her children.

Walter often found her there.

He never told her to go back to bed.

He simply stood beside her until the fear passed.

Years later, people told the story as the day a billionaire grandfather punched a cruel husband in a neonatal suite.

The divorce papers.

The mistress in the stolen coat.

The hospital turning against Dominic.

The sentence that made every nurse in the room hate him.

But Audrey remembered something quieter.

The moment before Walter arrived.

The moment Dominic dropped papers on her lap and expected her to collapse.

She had been pale.

Bleeding.

Terrified.

Holding two babies smaller than his conscience.

And still, she had made the call.

Grandfather, come to Saint Aurelia’s neonatal unit.

Bring security.

That was the moment Audrey stopped waiting for mercy from a man who had none.

Dominic thought he had left her with nothing.

He forgot she came from people who built hospitals, protected children, and documented everything.

He forgot that family is not the person who stands beside you for photographs.

May you like

Family is the person who walks into the room when you are too weak to stand and says, “Take your filthy hands off my family.”

And then makes the whole world obey.
