PART 6
The fraud review began with the joint accounts.
It did not end there.
Dominic had emptied three accounts the night Audrey went into emergency surgery.
He moved money into a business reserve.
Then from the reserve into a shell company.
Then from the shell company into an account connected to Natalie.
He thought the trail looked clever.
Walter’s forensic accountants called it childish.
By noon, every transfer had been reversed or frozen.
By three, Dominic’s consulting license was under review.
By five, his firm had received notice from Vale Medical Holdings that all pending financial partnerships were suspended.
Dominic called Audrey seventeen times.
She answered none of them.
He sent messages.
You humiliated me.
Your grandfather assaulted me.
Those babies are the reason this marriage failed.
I want my access restored.
Audrey read only one.
Then handed the phone to her attorney.
Walter stayed in the hospital room most of the day.
He sat in a chair too small for him, jacket off, tie loosened, looking at the twins like they were made of glass and thunder.
Henry slept.
Grace kept gripping Audrey’s finger with impossible strength.
Walter whispered, “She has your temper.”
Audrey almost smiled.
Then pain crossed her face.
Not physical.
The other kind.
“He called them runts.”
Walter’s eyes hardened.
“He called them what he had to call them to live with leaving them.”
Audrey looked at him.
“Do you think he ever loved us?”
Walter did not answer quickly.
That was why she trusted him.
Finally, he said, “I think he loved what he imagined your life could give him.”
“And when your life needed something from him, he resented it.”
Audrey closed her eyes.
A tear slid down her cheek.
Walter leaned forward.
“You are allowed to grieve the man you thought he was.”
“But do not hand him power because you are grieving.”
Audrey nodded.
That evening, a nurse returned with the cream maternity coat cleaned and folded.
Audrey looked at it.
Then at Natalie’s perfume still faintly clinging to the fabric.
“Burn it,” she whispered.
Walter shook his head.
“No.”
“Preserve it.”
Audrey stared at him.
“As evidence?”
Walter nodded.
“As evidence.”
Audrey looked down at her babies.
For the first time since Dominic entered the room, her voice did not shake.
May you like
“Then preserve everything.”
