PART 4

Dominic arrived at Saint Aurelia’s carrying papers like a man delivering a sentence.

Natalie walked beside him wearing Audrey’s stolen coat over her red dress.

That was the detail that made the nurse at the desk stop smiling.

The coat had Audrey’s initials embroidered inside the collar.

AV.

Small.

Cream thread.

Natalie did not know that.

Dominic did.

He had seen Audrey cry when Walter gave it to her.

Now he let his mistress wear it into the neonatal suite like a victory flag.

Audrey was propped against pillows, pale and trembling, with both twins finally tucked against her chest for skin-to-skin bonding.

The nurse whispered, “Do you want me to call security?”

Audrey looked toward the hallway.

“No.”

“Not yet.”

Dominic entered without knocking.

His eyes moved over the babies with irritation.

Then to Audrey.

Then to the papers.

Natalie lingered behind him, touching the coat belt.

Dominic smiled.

“I will make this quick.”

Audrey said nothing.

He dropped the packet onto her lap.

The top page slid dangerously close to Henry’s blanket.

Audrey moved it away with one shaking hand.

Dominic’s lip curled.

“Still dramatic.”

The nurse stepped forward.

“Sir, lower your voice.”

Dominic ignored her.

He looked straight at Audrey.

“I emptied the joint accounts.”

“You and these runts are on your own.”

Audrey felt the nurse beside her go still.

The babies shifted against her chest.

Grace made a tiny sound.

Audrey kissed the top of her daughter’s head.

Natalie laughed softly.

Not fully.

Just enough to show she wanted to be cruel but feared the room.

“He said you wouldn’t need the coat anymore.”

Audrey looked at the coat.

Then at Dominic.

Then at Natalie.

Her voice was quiet.

“That coat was a gift from my grandfather.”

Dominic shrugged.

“Then he can buy you another one.”

The suite doors opened.

A security team entered first.

Then two senior administrators.

Then Walter Vale.

Dominic turned, annoyed.

“Who the hell are you?”

Walter looked at the divorce papers on Audrey’s lap.

Then at the twins.

Then at Dominic.

He stepped forward and struck him once.

Fast.

Precise.

Furious.

Dominic crashed against a chair.

Walter’s voice filled the room.
