PART 2

Dominic had not known Audrey was a Vale when he married her.

That was not an accident.

Audrey used her mother’s last name in public.

Audrey Brooks.

Quiet.

Private.

Ordinary enough to be underestimated.

Her grandfather, Walter Vale, preferred it that way.

He had built hospitals, surgical centers, pharmaceutical labs, and medical charities from nothing but discipline and rage.

By the time Audrey was born, his name opened every boardroom in the country.

But money had also ruined most of the people who came near him.

So when Audrey turned twenty-one, Walter gave her two things.

A trust.

And a warning.

“Never let a man love the door your name can open more than the woman standing in front of it.”

Audrey listened.

Then she met Dominic Mercer.

He was charming in a quiet, polished way.

A financial consultant with clean suits, soft hands, and a talent for looking humble beside richer people.

He brought her coffee during late work nights.

He held her coat when she was cold.

He spoke gently to nurses when Audrey volunteered at Saint Aurelia’s children’s wing.

For the first year, he seemed safe.

Audrey told him only that her grandfather was “in medicine.”

Dominic never asked more.

That pleased her.

Then they married.

Then the twins came early.

Then everything changed.

Dominic hated the hospital bills even though Audrey told him they were covered.

He hated the constant monitoring.

He hated that doctors entered without asking him first.

He hated that Audrey’s body had become the center of attention.

But what he hated most was the twins.

Not openly at first.

He called them “tiny fighters” when nurses were near.

But alone, he said they were expensive.

Complicated.

Not what he signed up for.

Audrey thought exhaustion had made him cruel.

Then Natalie appeared.

Pregnant.

Beautiful.

Smug.

A woman Dominic introduced as “someone who understands peace.”

Audrey was seven months pregnant when she found the messages.

Dominic had promised Natalie that once Audrey delivered, he would remove her from the apartment, drain the marital accounts, and use the divorce settlement to start fresh.

He called the twins a medical liability.

He called Audrey weak.

He called Walter “some old man she never visits.”

Audrey sent every screenshot to her attorney.

Then she went into labor three weeks early.

She did not tell Dominic she knew.

She waited.

Because Walter Vale had taught her something else too.
