Doctor Recognizes Newborn’s Birthmark Before Smirking Ex-Husband Claims the Baby.
Dr. Nathan Pierce was supposed to hand the newborn to his mother.
Instead, he froze.
Vivian Sterling lay exhausted in the delivery bed, damp hair clinging to her cheeks, an IV taped to her arm, monitor wires crossing her hospital gown. Her breathing was shallow, broken by pain and disbelief that the baby was finally here.
Nathan held the newborn securely against a white hospital blanket with pink-and-blue stripes.
Then his gloved thumb shifted the blanket near the baby’s ear.
A tiny birthmark showed beneath it.
Nathan’s face changed.
Tears filled his eyes before he could stop them.
“No… this can’t be right.”
Vivian lifted her head weakly.
“Doctor, what’s wrong with my baby?”
Nathan looked from the baby to Vivian as if he had just recognized a ghost in a child who had only been alive for minutes.
He did not answer.
Behind them, the delivery room door opened.
Julian Sterling stepped inside in a black three-piece suit, immaculate and smiling, as if the birth of a child were a meeting he had arrived late to but still expected to control.
He looked at Vivian only once.
Then at the baby.
“Step aside. I came for my son.”
Vivian’s hand tightened around the blanket near her chest.
Nathan turned his body slightly, keeping the newborn safely away from Julian’s reach.
Julian’s smile thinned.
Nathan angled the baby’s head just enough for the tiny mark to remain visible.
His voice trembled, but his eyes did not.
“Then explain the mark beneath his ear.”
Julian stopped mid-step.
His extended hand lowered.
The smile disappeared.
“What did you just say?”
Vivian stared between them, horror rising through her exhaustion.
