Chapter 5

Vivian did not understand the birthmark.
That frightened her most.
Julian understood something.
Nathan understood something.
She understood only that her baby had been born into a secret she had not consented to carry.
“What mark?” she whispered.
Nathan looked at her gently.
“There is a small birthmark beneath his ear. It is not harming him.”
“Then why are you crying?”
The question broke something in Nathan’s expression.
Julian answered before he could.
“Because he is being dramatic.”
Nathan did not look away from Julian.
“No.”
Julian adjusted his cuff.
“You are overstepping.”
“You came into a delivery room and demanded a newborn from a recovering patient.”
“I am the father.”
Vivian turned her head sharply.
“You don’t get to say that like it’s settled.”
Julian’s eyes cut toward her.
“Careful.”
One word.
Soft.
Threatening.
Nathan heard it clearly.
So did the nurses.
Vivian’s mouth closed, but her eyes filled with rage through the exhaustion.
Nathan looked down at the infant.
The baby’s tiny face moved against the blanket.
Alive.
Unaware.
Carrying a mark that seemed to terrify a man who claimed him without tenderness.
Nathan’s mind went back to a sealed letter in an old hospital archive.
A photograph taken before records disappeared.
A family inquiry that ended too quickly.
A name he had not spoken aloud in years.
He did not say any of it.
Not in front of Julian.
Not before Vivian knew what was safe.
Instead, Nathan stepped closer to the bed and lowered the baby carefully into Vivian’s arms.
She pulled him against her chest with trembling hands.
Julian’s face hardened.
Nathan stayed between them.

Whatever the birthmark meant, Julian would not be the first person to define it.
