Chapter 7

The nurse named Allison moved first.

She adjusted Vivian’s IV line, then casually positioned herself near the doorway.

Not blocking it.

Not calling anyone.

Just present.

The second nurse checked the newborn’s chart and quietly marked time of birth, Apgar notes, and identifying features.

Nathan noticed.

Good nurses know when details matter.

Julian noticed too.

“What are you writing?”

The nurse did not look at him.

“Standard newborn documentation.”

His mouth tightened.

“Leave that for later.”

Nathan turned.

“No. Finish it now.”

The nurse continued writing.

Julian stared at her as if unused to being ignored by staff.

Vivian watched the exchange, fear mixing with something new.

Understanding.

People were no longer moving only around Julian’s commands.

They were moving around her and the baby.

Nathan stepped to the bedside.

“Vivian, I need to ask you this clearly. Do you consent to Julian holding the baby right now?”

Julian snapped, “That is unnecessary.”

Vivian’s eyes stayed on her son.

“No.”

The word was weak from exhaustion, but unmistakable.

Julian’s face darkened.

Nathan nodded.

“Then he does not hold him.”

“This is absurd,” Julian said.

“No,” Vivian whispered, stronger now. “This is the first time anyone asked me.”

The sentence landed hard.

Julian looked at her as if she had betrayed him.

Nathan looked at her like she had just anchored herself back to the world.

The newborn stirred in her arms.

Vivian lowered her face to his blanket and breathed in carefully.

For one moment, the mystery of the mark, Julian’s panic, and Nathan’s tears faded.

There was only a mother holding her child.

Then Julian spoke again.

“You have no idea what you’re protecting.”

Nathan’s eyes lifted.

May you like

“Maybe I do.”
