Chapter 10

No one revealed the newborn’s biological father that night.

No one explained the full history of the birthmark.

No custody conflict was resolved beside Vivian’s hospital bed.

No police entered.

No security guards removed Julian from the room.

The baby remained in Vivian’s arms, wrapped securely in the striped hospital blanket, his tiny face turned toward her heartbeat.

Nathan stood beside them, still shaken but steady.

The nurses continued documenting quietly.

The monitors hummed.

The IV line dripped.

Cool clinical light washed over a room that had become too full of old secrets for a newborn’s first hour of life.

Julian stood near the doorway now.

Not because anyone had forced him there.

Because every step closer made the room watch him harder.

His polished confidence had thinned into something sharp and afraid.

He looked at Nathan.

“You’re mistaken.”

Nathan’s eyes did not move.

“Am I?”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

Vivian looked down at her son, then back at the doctor.

“What does the mark mean?”

Nathan’s expression softened with pain.

“I need to confirm something before I tell you.”

Julian’s face changed again.

Confirm.

Another word he did not like.

Another word that meant records, witnesses, files, dates, things buried but not destroyed.

The newborn shifted softly in Vivian’s arms.

She held him closer.

Julian looked at the tiny space beneath the baby’s ear, mostly hidden now by the blanket.

Then at Nathan’s tear-streaked face.

Then at Vivian, who was no longer looking to him for answers.

And in that silence, Julian Sterling finally understood the danger was not the birthmark itself.

It was that Dr. Nathan Pierce knew where he had seen it before.

A secret his family buried had just been born again.

And this time, it was breathing in Vivian’s arms.
